Grace had been to see a film with Mia during the week, which had felt like a delicious and rather daring evening out, rather than what it was, which was an acceptance of a casual invitation on Mia’s part. But Penn listened, laughing as she outlined the plot.

‘So...let me get this right. Everyone thinks that the wretched, bullying uncle has been murdered by his nephew. But the detective immediately knows that he’s innocent because...’ Penn shrugged in disbelief.

‘It was a bit more textured than that. But yes, it did have quite a bit of jumping to conclusions that I couldn’t really follow. The setting was beautiful, though. An old stately home in the wilds of Yorkshire.’ Grace ventured a teasing smile. ‘You know the kind of thing.’

Penn shot her a wry look. This was the first time that she’d alluded to anything that might be even vaguely connected with his title, and Grace wondered whether she’d gone too far. It seemed to be a very sore point for him.

Then he grinned. ‘We have murders all the time down at the castle in Cornwall. That’s why I never go there. I reckon I’d be the first to fall foul of all the intricate plots going on. It’s a lot safer at the glassworks.’

Grace wondered whether she’d ever get to actually see the castle. It didn’t really matter either way, but she was still a little curious and wanted to know everything about Penn.

‘Wise move. Although you might turn out to be the one who solves all the murders. Surgeon turned part-time detective.’ Penn would make a very good hero.

‘I think I’ll stick to what I know. So how about you? Did the world suddenly crumble just because you took an evening off?’

‘Funnily enough, no. Although my flat’s looking a bit the worse for wear since Thursday evening is usually my cleaning and ironing night. So it’ll be double bubble next week.’

Penn chuckled. ‘I should send my cleaner round to give you a hand. She’d be thrilled. She’s always complaining that I don’t make enough mess, largely because I’m hardly ever there. She told me the other day that I was threatening her livelihood.’

A lump suddenly lodged in Grace’s throat. He could do that, couldn’t he? She imagined that Penn’s house in Holland Park was just as nice as the location sounded, and it made sense that he had a cleaner because there were so many other things Penn needed to spend time on. But the idea that a word from him could eradicate the pile of ironing from her life and render her kitchen spotless was uncomfortable. What would be an adequate gesture in return?

She shouldn’t think like that. Penn clearly didn’t, but then he didn’t have to. He didn’t have to count his own generosity, and he couldn’t understand how it might erode her own feeling of independence.

‘Sorry...’ He’d seen that he’d said the wrong thing and looked suddenly embarrassed. That wasn’t fair—he shouldn’t have to apologise for what he had.
